The Shadowhunters are back in Chain of Iron by Cassandra Clare. With the wedding of James and Cordelia and the joining of two families, for a moment things seem to have settled down in London. As more mysterious murders targeting shadowhunters begin around the city, the group is once again chasing the forces of evil to find the newest threat.

Review

BE WARNED that the below contains MAJOR SPOILERS.

I have to get these feelings out of the way before I can talk about the book as a whole – WOW the ending of Chain of Iron by Cassandra Clare is so stupid. For those that are here for the spoilers – Cordelia sees James with Grace and decides that this is the last straw. She seeks out Matthew who convinces her to go to Paris with him. They leave and James, realizing what’s happened goes after them, running through London and the train station to catch them and profess his feelings to Cordelia. Instead, he’s caught by his father and goes to save Lucie, not speaking to Cordelia before she leaves for Paris with Matthew.

I am legitimately angry at how this book ended. I know that Clare needs to keep the suspense up to keep us going into the next book and the “will they won’t they” trope with James and Cordelia is a part of that, this ending still felt like the worst of all worlds. It felt so rushed and changed its mind at the last minute in a way that I didn’t appreciate. Especially since they used the “running through the airport” trope just to cut it short. Idk, I wish we could have just skipped it if they weren’t going to get together for real in this book.

Cordelia deserves better.

Now on to other things. I was happy to see more of Anna and her personal life in this book… I want to be her when I grow up. Is it bad that I want a movie of just Anna and her life? I feel like her clothes would be the best visually as well.

The one thing that’s still bothering me (less than the above but still) is why Lucie is so naive! It seems like she is out of step with the rest of the group in this and it’s putting them all in danger. Maybe I’m just mad because it’s now standing in the way of her brother’s happiness with Cordelia.

I recommend these books if you’ve read Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare and must know how the rest of the story goes. Otherwise don’t read it because the ending is stupid.
