Even though Alina and Mal have made it far away from the Ravka court and the clutches of the Darkling, tensions are still rising. They are soon caught back up in the scandal of the Darkling and thrust into the search for the next amplifier – this time at sea. With new friends and the forces of darkens mounting, they must act quickly to create alliances and protect Ravka.
Why I liked Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo
I love a book that takes place at sea. The first half of this book hit all the right notes for me when it comes to nautical adventures. While I was disappointed that Alina and Mal did not stay free, this was the next best plot. I would have been happy if they were able to run farther west into the sunset, but I do understand that it would not have made a good trilogy if it ended there.
But PIRATES. I love pirate adventures and this novel scratched that itch. Between the steampunk science and time at sea, this book has everything. I’m going to put some spoilers behind a cut because I did not see the end of this book coming and there are a few other spoilers I would like to discuss. So the fact that Nikolai is the PRINCE OF RAVKA was something that not only I did not see coming. It thew me for a loop for a while as it creates a perfect romantic triangle. I’m team Mal all the way, but Nikolai is very charming and I think that he’s a good character. I almost wish he was there but did not have any interest in Alina. I like their friendship much more than any love connection between the two of them.
AND ABOUT THAT ENDING! I was at the edge of my seat through the whole last battle. The Nichevo’ya are TERRIFYING! And the number of casualties there were in the first and second books among the Grisha is devastating. While I understand the stakes are as high as they can get the losses are still heartrending. Bardugo is a fantastic storyteller and I am connected to her characters so that the losses are hard. I will not forget this story for some time.
This is the second book in this trilogy, so If you need to catch up read my review of Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo here!
