The Five Best Books for 2018

by Kate Schiffman-

A new year means new books! With YA and Fantasy on the rise, I had a hard time narrowing down the the books that I am interested in for next year. These 5 are the ones that I am most looking forward to reading, though I’ll leave a runner up list at the bottom!

I’m calling it now – 2018 will be the year of the dark-grim future fantasy. This is partially just because I want more and more of this type of books, but I think we can all agree, this is the trend of the moment! 🙂

The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air)

Like the Court of Thorns and Roses trilogy this book centers around a mortal in a faerie court. Instead of her place being a given, the main character of this book, a young woman named Jude, will have to fight the battle every courtier has to fight. A game of wit, palace intrigue and defiance ensues and Jude fights to have a place in a world ruled by a cruel prince who hates her. Coming out on 1/2/2018 The Cruel Prince will start out book year off right!

Heart of Iron by Ashely Poston

Like Cinder, Heart of Iron takes place in a future world run by machine. Found in space with an android named D09, Ana, our heroine has always created space in a world that is not designed for an young woman. Among thieves and outlaws, Ana is thrust into a quest to save her android friend. Up against a young man of more means than herself, it is a race against time for Ana. Releasing 2/27/2018, this retelling of the story of Anastasia is one that I will not be missing!

Everless by Sarah Holland

In the world of Everless, time is literally worth its weight in gold. The rich have found a way to extract it from others and consume it for their own gain. For Jules Ember this has become a problem as her father is dying, and needs more time. As she races to get him more time she will have to go back to places that banished them before, places that she does not want to go. Coming out 1/2/2018, Everless promises to be heart pumping to the conclusion.

A Girl Like That by Tanaz Bhathena

A daring trouble-maker, Zarin Wadia, in the middle of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia ends up dead on the side of the road with a young man. While young girls are often told not to be involved with “A Girl Like That”, is the truth of her life much more interesting and complicated than it seems on first blush? Only time will tell. Told from multiple perspectives this novel coming out on 2/27/2018 will be one of the most interesting female YA of the first part of this year

The Hazel Wood: A Novel by Melissa Albert

The Hazel Wood is one of those wonderful books about books. When Alice’s grandmother dies on her estate the Hazel Wood; it seems that something more is a foot. Fans of her grandmother’s set of novels are coming out of the wood works as well as some other characters that appear to be from Hinterland, her grandmother’s mythical world. Alice must team up with a fan of Hinterland and venture into The Hazel Wood to find the origin of these interesting stories. Coming out on 1/30/2018, this fantasy will be one for the books!
